What are the best 5 horror films of all time and why?

I was inspired to write this blog by 2 (very different) trips around Europe. The first, with a good friend of mine, passed with the most pointless conversations about all manner of subjects, many of them listed on this blog now.

The second trip was with a new girlfriend along a similar route. About 30 minutes into our journey and conscious of the thousands of miles ahead of us travelling together, I enquired "So, what's your top 5 films of all time?" She replied "Oh I don't like conversations like that."

I then realised that there was a point after all to the pointless conversations I had had 2 years previously, if nothing more than to enjoy endless hours of being stuck with someone travelling.

What are the best 5 horror films of all time and why?

1. The Omen - because of the impact Revelations had on me at age 12
2. The Exorcist - because the scariest thing up to then was Christopher Lee as Dracula
3. Hellraiser - for the great monsters
4. Salem's Lot - because that's what a vampire should look like
5. The Ring (US version) - because the storyline is much better than the Japanese version
